The Grenadiers have confirmed their elite status within CONCACAF by sitting comfortably at sixth in the latest FIFA ranking for the region. Worldwide, Haiti is the 69th best national team according to FIFA.
There were very few movements in the ranking of the top 10 teams of CONCACAF from January to February besides an amazing bounce by Honduras to push Haiti back one spot and seize the fifth spot. The Catrachos who will have far more opportunities than Haiti to maintain and even better their ranking thanks to their presence in the CONCACAF final qualifying rounds for the 2018 World Cup and the confirmed participation at the 2017 Gold Cup helped themselves by storming through the UNCAF Cup to dethrone former champion Costa Rica.
Haiti will have a do-or-die playoff series versus Nicaragua on the 24 and 28 March this year, respectively in Port-au-Prince and Managua. This will be the team’s last opportunity to make it to a major regional completion before 2018. A failure by the Grenadiers to fend off the Petroleros challenge will surely result in Haiti’s lost of its CONCACAF elite status for years.
